Pneumatic pump systems

Rotary & gear pump alternatives.
Start with your duty.

A pneumatic vessel-transfer system can be an alternative to a gear or rotary lobe pump for suitable liquid-transfer duties. Selection depends on viscosity, flow profile, air contact, piping and total operating cost.

The conventional-pump column describes general design considerations. Individual gear and lobe pump products have different features.

AspectSINOSEN pneumatic systemGear / rotary lobe system
Transfer principleCompressed air acts on liquid in a pressure vessel.Rotating gears or lobes mechanically displace liquid.
Shaft-seal maintenanceNo rotating shaft seal in the transfer vessel; valves and instruments still need service.Conventional sealed designs need seal inspection; seal-less alternatives also exist.
Product interactionNo rotating pumping element in the vessel; valves and piping still influence shear and crystals.Low-shear designs are available; suitability depends on clearances, speed and the liquid.
Flow profileCyclic transfer; twin vessels coordinate feeding and discharge. Flow stability is engineered.Continuous rotational displacement; actual pulsation and metering depend on pump design.
Hygiene & cleaningHygienic construction and optional CIP are specified for the complete route.Hygienic and CIP-capable designs are available in suitable pump ranges.
Energy & utilitiesEvaluate compressor efficiency, air consumption, pressure losses and cycle duty.Evaluate motor power, pump efficiency, speed control and the duty point.
InstallationA preassembled skid reduces field assembly; utility connections and site acceptance remain.Scope ranges from a standalone pump to a fully integrated skid package.

Technical questions, answered

Can it replace every gear or rotary lobe pump?

Replacement is application-specific. We check viscosity at operating temperature, solids, air compatibility, flow stability, pressure drop, hygiene and total compressed-air cost. Metering duties, oxygen-sensitive products and hazardous fluids need separate review.

Is the system maintenance-free?

It removes the rotating pump element and its shaft-seal maintenance. Valves, seats, instruments, filters, pressure protection and the vessel still require planned inspection and service.

Does a dual-vessel system guarantee constant flow?

Alternating vessels can support continuous feeding and reduce transfer interruptions. Instantaneous outlet flow is not automatically constant. Valve transitions, air supply, pipeline resistance and receiver design must be evaluated for the required flow profile.

Is this a direct drop-in replacement for a rotary pump?

Usually not. A pneumatic vessel system has different space, piping, compressed-air, venting and control requirements. SINOSEN evaluates the complete transfer duty before proposing a replacement.

What is the difference between a rotary pump, gear pump and rotary lobe pump?

Rotary pump is a broad category that includes gear, rotary lobe and other rotating positive-displacement designs. SINOSEN uses compressed air acting on liquid in pressure vessels. It is an alternative transfer principle, rather than a spare gear-pump head or a like-for-like rotary pump.

When is a pneumatic alternative worth evaluating?

Consider an assessment when seal-related leakage, frequent service or difficult maintenance access affects a compatible bulk-liquid transfer duty. Confirm the root cause first: a blocked suction line, low product temperature or poor pipe sizing can remain a problem after changing the pump principle.

Will replacing my gear pump automatically reduce energy use?

No. Include compressor electricity, air treatment, peak air demand, venting and the complete operating cycle. Compare both options at the same throughput, temperature, pressure and annual operating hours, alongside maintenance and measured product loss.

A replacement assessment with a clear decision.

An effective rotary pump replacement starts by defining what must improve: reliability, product handling, maintenance access or installed cost. A pneumatic skid changes the transfer method and the site interfaces. Use a common duty to compare the complete alternatives.

1. Establish the current operating baseline

Send the installed gear or rotary lobe pump make, model and speed; actual flow and differential pressure; liquid temperature and viscosity; operating hours; repair records; and the piping route. Separate a pump-design limitation from a process or installation problem.

2. Check process compatibility and retrofit interfaces

Confirm air contact, foaming, oxidation sensitivity, solids, cleaning requirements and acceptable flow variation. Check the pressure-vessel footprint, gravity or assisted filling, receiver, vent arrangement, compressor capacity and PLC interfaces. Metering duties, very limited space and air-sensitive products need particular review.

3. Compare the complete installed scope

Include vessels, valves, air preparation, controls, installation and commissioning for the pneumatic proposal. Include the pump, drive, sealing arrangement and required auxiliaries for the rotary-pump proposal. Evaluate measured energy, maintenance, cleaning, product loss and downtime on the same annual basis.

4. Agree what demonstrates a successful replacement

Define required throughput, product-quality checks, utility consumption, cleaning performance and the site acceptance test before purchase. SINOSEN can develop a duty-based equipment proposal once the process information has been reviewed.
