AIR AND HYGIENE

Why peak air demand can limit a pneumatic transfer skid

A pressure dip during vessel changeover can reduce throughput even when the compressor has enough average capacity.

Observe pressure while the system runs

Static header pressure before a cycle is not a sufficient utility test. Trend pressure at the skid inlet through filling, pressurization and discharge. A rapid demand can expose limitations in the distribution line, regulator, filter or flexible connection. Record other large air users operating at the same time.

Find the restrictive part

Compare pressure upstream and downstream of treatment equipment under the relevant flow. Review pipe bore, length, bends, isolation valves and filter condition. Avoid changing the process setpoint simply to conceal a utility restriction. The supplied pressure must stay within the approved operating envelope and provide the flow used in the capacity calculation.

Review sequencing and storage together

Where several vessels share a header, carefully coordinated starts may reduce coincident demand. A correctly sized local receiver can supply a short peak while the network replenishes it. Its design requires the peak profile, allowable pressure band and recharge time. A receiver selected only by a rough volume rule may not resolve the actual issue.

Include the utility in acceptance

Run the agreed production pattern, including credible simultaneous loads. Measure sustained throughput and dynamic supply pressure. If the utility differs from the quotation basis, document the consequence and the corrective scope. This helps prevent a disagreement in which a factory tests the skid under a pressure condition that the supplier never used for its performance commitment.

General engineering guidance. Numerical examples are illustrative; project specifications and acceptance criteria are agreed for the actual duty.
